In northern Tanzania there is Lake Natron, very close to the Kenyan border.
With an area of 1,040 km2, it seems like a calm body of water, without previously giving threatening warnings of its danger, especially for animal species that dare to approach and that are unaware of its peculiar chemical characteristics. The lake water has highly alkaline and caustic characteristics, presenting Ph levels with values ranging between 10 and 12. This can cause burning of the skin and death in those animals that are not used to these extreme characteristics. The case of the shark passing through Natron, found dead by famous pirates who cut off parts of its mouth and eyes to be used and adapted in a shark-shaped caravel in order to be more intimidating to their enemies.
